How to Choose Flattering Patterns & Prints

The thought of wearing prints is daunting for many.

Prints draw attention and not everyone’s comfortable with that. They’re usually “louder” than solid bright colours because of their multicolour scheme. And they carry messages that tell others who you are as person. For example, most people associate florals with a feminine/girlish personality. While plaid conveys being relaxed.

It’s scary having a print garment say so much about you, and without you saying a word!

But despite that, prints and patterns are also a fabulous way to create fun and fashion-forward outfits - only IF you know how to do it right.

The key to wearing prints with style is to choose a pattern that flatters you and looks good with the rest of your outfit. Not least, it should also be appropriate for the setting.

There are several factors to consider when choosing a print that flatters And by flatter, I mean, the pattern should complement your physical traits, such as body scale and personal coloring.
Image consultant Imogen Lamport gives you excellent tips on how to choose patterns that flatter with several illustrated examples.

Patterns that are appropriate for the setting
Wearing the “wrong” pattern for the wrong occasion is not chic. It’s important to take note of the dress code (spoken or unspoken) of the occasion or setting before deciding on what pattern to wear. Remember that floral patterns isn’t appropriate for the corporate office. Neither are polka dots.
